Boarding Facilities at Scarvagh
Isolation Unit
The Isolation Unit was a major success for Scarvagh last season, all mares except for Walk In's were brought to the isolation unit on arrival. As each mare came off the transport they were tagged, weighed and photographed, this was not only an insurance policy for us but it also assisted the veterinary side, as condition scoring of mares prior to covering is essential. Once the vets were satisfied the mares were safe for moving, they were allocated to their prescribed unit.
Walkers Unit
Barren mare unit with stabling for approximately 100 mares. Developed to accomodate young stock as well as mares. The young stock are kept in two carpet dust yards with adjoining sheds.
Warwicks Unit
This unit is based on the Scarvagh estate. It is an independent unit used for homebred mares and foals.
Beechgrove Unit
Beechgrove is a self-contained unit set on 120 acres of prime County Down pasture.
This unit has two sectors:
1. A 60 stable barn with 5 acres of all weather surface for the winter, where mares can get out during the day and feed on haylage in round feeders. This unit caters solely for single mares that thave been covered and are awaiting their 14 and 16 day scans respectively. This unit is managed and operated by a team of 4 staff.
2. A 30 stable unit for mares and foals with once again approximately 4 acres of all weather surface for the winter operated under the same princpal as above. A team of 3 staff manage this unit.
Park Lane Unit
Park Lane is situated 3 miles from the main stud and is the adjacent farm to the foaling unit, surrounded by 55 acres of grazing pasture. Mares and foals leaving the unit will proceed to Park Lane where they will then be set up for covering.
Foaling Unit
The foaling unit is located three miles from Scarvagh House. This is a purpose built unit with state of the art equipment and is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Its primary purpose is for foaling mares and to ensure the best care is given to foals prior to going to stud. Since its opening in 2005 it has facilitated the foaling of approximately 840 mares.
