Pedigree

  • As a Group 1 winning juvenile, a classic winner at 3 and now a proven Group 1 sire, Desert King is the epitome of the modern thoroughbred we all aspire to breed. From six crops of racing age in Europe, Australia and Japan, Desert King has no less than 56 individual stakeshorses, six Group 1 winners and a history-making runner in the shape of Australian Champion racemare Makybe Diva.
  • Makybe Diva is out of a mare by Riverman and is inbred to Northern Dancer 4x4x4. Riverman’s sire Never Bend also appears in the pedigree of French stakes-winner Grand Opening plus several stakes-placed runners while Northern Dancer is also duplicated in the pedigree of Group 1 winners Desert War, Chelsea Rose and Lachlan River, so it would seem that even though Desert King is himself inbred 3x3 to Northern Dancer, he is not averse to carrying another strain of that breed-shaper.
  • Desert King is showing his true prowess as a sire with an unrivalled Gr.1 Runners/Gr.1 Winners Ratio of 20%
  • Bering and his sire Arctic Tern appear in the female pedigree of stakes-winners Maranilla and Qui Es Tu. The relevance here being the relationship between Arctic Tern and Northern Dancer - both share Almahmoud as their granddam - further reinforcing the Northern Dancer connection. Northern Dancer’s dam Natalma appears twice in the pedigree of Danehill and Desert King’s Australian stakes-winner Basra carries another strain of Natalma in her female pedigree through Nostrum, her maternal grandsire.
  • One horse to be exploited with Desert King is the Derby winner Roberto. The son of Hail To reason is the maternal grand-sire of Makybe Diva and also appears in the pedigree of Lancashire Oaks heroine Place Rouge. Roberto is a grandson of Turn-to and that horse appears in the several stakes-performed offspring of Desert King through such descendants like Habitat and his sire Sir Gaylord.
  • Interestingly, the duplication between Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev is found in French Listed winners Pretty Tough and Always King, so further exploitation of this proven combination would seem well founded. Irish Listed winner Desert Fantasy is inbred 4x4 to the brother and sister combination of Thatch and Special makes another case for mares carrying Thatch in their pedigree.
  • Although it is getting further back in pedigrees, Ribot and Nearco are two horses that can be found in several of Desert King’s stakes-winners so there are numerous plays on this for European breeders.
  • Mr Prospector and his sire Raise A Native also feature regularly in the pedigrees of desert king’s stakes-performers. The English Listed winner Bygone Days is out of a mare by Midyan (who carries Ribot as his broodmare sire) while his granddam is by Sir Gaylord.
